. GREEN SAND CASTINGS CAST - MACHINED - FINISHED Green sand castings, has two main types of sand used for molding. The first is Green Sand, which tends to pack well and retain its shape consists of a mixture of silica sand, clay, moisture (water or oil), and other additives. Green sand is not green in color, but green in the sense that it is used in a wet state, similiar to green wood. The second method, air set, uses dry sand bonded with a fast curing adhesive binder. Air set molds offer more dimensional accuracy than green sand molds, but are more expensive. There are also two types of molding sand, natural bonded (bank sand) and synthetic (lake sand). Synthetic sand is generally preferred due to its more consistent composition. Sand castings made with coarse green sand will have a rough textured finish. This rough texture makes green sand castings easy to identify. On the plus side, green sand can be reused after adjusting its composition to replenish the lost moisture and additives. |

Green sand casting remains a popular casting method, especially for producing inexpensive ductile iron and grey iron castings. Good examples of green sand castings are manhole covers and storm drain grates. Since the green sand casting method is more labor intense than some other methods, it is an excellent choice for off shore production where labor is cheap.
