MAGNESIUM DIE CASTINGS CAST - MACHINED - FINISHED Magnesium die castings provide an efficient and economical method of obtaining magnesium components with a wide range of complex shapes and close tolerances. Magnesium die castings will require little or no secondary machining. The die casting process allows for the rapid production of tens of thousands of complex, thin wall, light weight, strong, and dimensionally accurate magnesium components. Magnesium die castings can be produced with very smooth or textured surfaces. The dies for magnesium die castings normally have a life of 100,000 cycles if the die is properly maintained. Magnesium die casting have excellent dimensional accuracy 0.005" for the first inch (0.1mm for the first 2.5cm) and 0.002" for each additional inch (0.05mm for each additional cm). Die castings can have smooth as cast surfaces, 40 to 100 RMS, and have thin walls, approximately 0.05" (1.27mm). |

There are some limitations to magnesium die castings. The part weight is normally limited to 44 Lbs (20 kgs). There is also a higher initial tooling cost compared to other casting methods. Most important is the low flash point of magnesium. Magnesium is highly flammable and very difficult to extinguish. Extreme care must be used when casting magnesium materials.
